Get ready for some exciting news, adventurers! Mountain Top Summer Day Camp in Breckenridge is thrilled to announce the addition of kayaking to our incredible lineup of summer activities! All campers registered for our awesome week-long sessions will have the opportunity to paddle their way across the scenic waters of Maggie Pond.
Why are we so excited about bringing kayaking to Mountain Top? Beyond the sheer fun of gliding across the water, we believe kayaking offers valuable experiences for our campers:
Teaching Independence: There's a special kind of freedom that comes with being in control of your own kayak. Campers will learn to navigate and maneuver their boats, receiving instant feedback with every paddle stroke. It's a fantastic way to foster self-reliance and decision-making skills in a safe and supportive environment.
Confidence Building: Mastering a new skill, like kayaking, can do wonders for a child's confidence. From their first paddle strokes to navigating around the pond, campers will feel a real sense of accomplishment, boosting their self-esteem and encouraging them to take on new challenges.
Outdoor Adventure & Water Safety: Risk management is always our top priority at Mountain Top, and our kayaking program is no exception. Campers will walk away with essential water safety knowledge and basic kayaking skills, setting a foundation for safe and responsible enjoyment of water activities in the future.

What can your camper expect?
If your child is registered for a full week of Mountain Top fun, they are guaranteed at least one day of kayaking, with several weeks offering the possibility of two paddling adventures! Campers registered for individual days may also get the opportunity to kayak, but camper groups and schedules are not predetermined making it a challenge to know exactly which days each camper and group will be kayaking. Please remember that all kayaking sessions are weather permitting, ensuring the safety and enjoyment of all participants.
Kayaking blocks will be approximately one hour long and are thoughtfully structured to provide a comprehensive and engaging experience. This includes:
Safety Briefing: We'll start with essential safety guidelines and instructions to ensure everyone feels comfortable and prepared.
Onshore Skills Practice: Before hitting the water, campers will practice fundamental paddling techniques on dry land, building a solid foundation for success.
Kayaking on Maggie Pond: Then comes the exciting part – getting out on the water! As campers gain confidence and skill, they'll participate in fun on-water activities, games, and individual challenges designed to enhance their abilities and make the experience even more enjoyable.
Our Mountain Top Commitment: Strict Risk Management Practices
At Mountain Top, we take risk management incredibly seriously. We've developed a detailed risk management plan specifically for our kayaking program, implementing strict protocols across the board. This includes meticulous instructor recruitment, comprehensive certifications, and ongoing training to ensure the highest standards of safety.
Expert Instruction: Every lead kayaking instructor is a trained lifeguard and is equipped with all necessary safety gear.
Dedicated Support: Alongside our lead instructors, we'll have dedicated on-shore personnel and additional support staff on the water with each group of approximately 15 campers.
Explorium Specific Training: Our team receives specialized training focused on effective group management and the unique characteristics of our location.
Layered Safety Approach: There will always be multiple Mountain Top instructors present, each with a clearly defined role – whether it's solely focused on camper safety, providing expert skills instruction, or assisting with group coordination.
We are absolutely thrilled to introduce kayaking to the Mountain Top Summer Day Camp experience! It's going to be an unforgettable summer filled with adventure, learning, and lots of fun on the water. More questions about our program? Please call or email anytime.
